Remembering Holland in '75! [Jun. 28th, 2006|02:59 am]

I couldn't sleep tonight so I thought I'd see what I could find about some of the places my parents and I visited in Holland back when I was 10 years old.

While places like Cullen Gardens in WHitby and Tivoli Miniature World at Niagara Falls have disappeared, I'm happy to say that Madurodam still exists in Holland...

That same day we went to Scevinenigen where I rode this beautiful carousel. This was the only picture I could find when I tried Googling for it.

Another place we visited was the Euromast in Rotterdam...

It kind of reminds me of a cross between the Skylon and the Clifton HIll Spiral Tower. When you get to the observation deck there is still that revolving elevator that coils up the rest of the way.

Kingston and Ganaoque [Jun. 23rd, 2006|12:22 am]

Today I was thinking about the vacation my parents and I took way back in 1976 when we travelled all the way down to Kingston. We stopped at Old Fort Henry and went on the guided tour there and saw the battle re-enactment.

That night we stayed at a motel that had a pool but never had a chance to use it.

The following morning we went to Ganaoque where we had breakfast at a local restaurant. I ordered pancakes with strawberries that were a peculliar brown colour.

Near the restaurant was also the "House of Haunts" complete with a headless mannequin outside. I didn't want to go there so I was glad my parents never mentioned it.

We then went on the boat cruise. I don't remember much since it was 30 years ago already, but I do remember the ship stopping at Boldt Castle. We could have gotten out to explore the castle if we wanted to but I forget why we didn't.

Probably because my parents wanted to get home sooner. The car wasn't working properly and I was coming down with something. I had a fever and mom kept me amused by giving me a corking kit. I ran out of the yarn that came with it rather quickly.

At least once we finally got the car fixed we spent the rest of our vacation up at the trailer, but Dr. Ho had perscribed me penicillin. We TOLD him I was allergic to it, but he didn't listen, so I broke ut in a rash because of it. It was a vile, nasty liquid that tasted andsmelt like sulphured peaches.

Someday I wouldn't mind going back to Ganaoque and getting a better look at the place and not have to be rushed away due to car trouble and/or illness.

Storybook Gardens... [Jun. 9th, 2006|03:58 pm]

Here's a place I haven't been to since I was 8 years old...

http://www.storybook.london.ca/attractions.htm

My parents and I went there a couple times on our way to Sarnia and it looks like it hasn't really changed all that much. The carousel may have been repainted but the centrepole housing behind it still looks the same. You can't see the rounding boards, but according to an article in the Carousel News and Trader, they were changed not long ago, the classic 50's art deco boards replaced by a more recent style with moons and stars...

Remembering VOyageur Restaurants [Jun. 9th, 2006|12:37 am]

On the way home from school today I got thinking about Voyageur Restaurants and how I haven't seen one in years. I'm sure that when we used to travel to Sarnia there were two, one on either side of the highway, almost like mirror images from eachother. Voyageur restaurants had this distinctive pointy red roof...

I looked at several different search engines but this was the only picture I could find. Fortunately, it was also the first. It can be found in this wonderful collection of vintage postcards...

I don't think these places exist anymore. Last time I was at a VOyageur restaurant was 1982 on our school trip to New York.

Perhaps one of my earliest memories of Voyageur restaurants was AUnt Thurza buying me my first Pez dispenser there. It was Mowgli from Jungle Book.
